#JusticeForRwanda Launched at European Parliament: Confronting an Oppressive Regime That Hunts Critics Across Europe
The Launch
The Global Campaign for Rwandans' Human Rights officially launched the #JusticeForRwanda campaign at the European Parliament, calling on Members of the European Parliament and EU institutions to confront the reality of Rwanda's oppressive regime and to take concrete action to hold it accountable.
The launch event brought together parliamentarians, human rights defenders, legal experts, Rwandan diaspora representatives and civil society organisations to present evidence of systematic human rights abuses by an oppressive regime that has operated with impunity for too long.
What the Campaign Demands
The #JusticeForRwanda campaign calls on the European Parliament and EU member states to: - Condemn Rwanda's systematic human rights abuses - including political imprisonment, torture, enforced disappearances and the assassination of critics both inside Rwanda and abroad - Demand the immediate release of all political prisoners - opposition figures, journalists, lawyers and activists imprisoned on fabricated charges - Implement targeted sanctions against Rwandan officials responsible for torture, disappearances and assassinations - Suspend security sector cooperation with a regime whose intelligence services hunt critics across European soil - Open universal jurisdiction investigations in EU member states against credibly accused Rwandan officials - End the weaponisation of genocide ideology laws - the regime's cynical use of the 1994 genocide memory to criminalise all dissent - Protect Rwandan exiles in Europe who face surveillance, threats and attacks from Kigali's agents
The Reality the EU Must Confront
Rwanda's regime presents itself to the world as a model of development and stability. The European Parliament launch aimed to shatter this facade by presenting the evidence: - An oppressive regime that commits severe abuses of every type of human right - No free media - journalists are imprisoned, exiled or killed - No fair justice - the judiciary is controlled by the executive, political trials are predetermined - Political imprisonment - opposition figures jailed on fabricated 'genocide ideology' charges - Torture in military intelligence facilities with total impunity - Assassinations abroad - the regime's reach extends into Europe itself - The weaponisation of the 1994 genocide to silence all criticism and label opponents as criminals
The Genocide Card
A central focus of the launch was the regime's exploitation of the 1994 genocide to shield itself from international criticism. Western governments, haunted by their failure to intervene in 1994, have been reluctant to hold the regime accountable. This guilt has been cynically manipulated to secure continued aid, silence criticism and protect torturers from prosecution.
The #JusticeForRwanda campaign demands an end to this exploitation. Genuine justice for the victims of 1994 requires accountability for all crimes by all parties - not the cynical use of genocide memory to protect an oppressive regime from scrutiny.
