Let Us Remember Kizito Mihigo - Twibuke Kizito Mihigo
Kizito Mihigo, a well-known gospel singer and reconciliation activist, was arrested on 6 April 2014, after releasing a song that raised awareness about the value of a human life. That song was considered to be critical of the Rwandan government and it was immediately prohibited by Rwandan authorities.
The Rwandan prosecution authorities announced that he was arrested on 15 April 2014, despite the fact that he was taken away on 6 April 2014 by security services. We have reason to believe that between 6 and 15 April 2014, Kizito was taken to a secret location where he was tortured or threatened, which led him to accept the accusations of the prosecutor during his trial.
He was charged with planning to oust the government. In February 2015, he was sentenced to 10 years of imprisonment after being convicted of conspiracy against the government of President Paul Kagame. This sentence was based on a text conversation he had with a political activist who is in exile.
Kizito should be released immediately because he was arrested and kept for 5 days without access to a lawyer or his family, and all the accusations presented in court were false and politically motivated.
