Truth Telling: The Important First Step Towards Reconciliation

Rwanda's history has been marked by various periods of conflict characterised by different degrees of violence. They have been recurring as a result of unresolved grievances from the previous ones and lack of access to free and fair justice for the victims.

The best way to address grievances in a post-conflict society is to provide and ensure justice for all the victims.

This can be achieved effectively if principles of justice are guided by a narrative constructed in a truth-telling format, organised at both local and national levels.

Experiences of other countries that have had conflicts have demonstrated that truth-telling plays an important role in providing justice, preventing the recurrence of civil war and reconciling communities and individuals.
