Assassination of Col Karegeya Is Another Act of Barbaric Action Against a Rwandan Opposition Activist

The Global Campaign for Rwandans' Rights condemns in the strongest possible terms the assassination of Colonel Patrick Karegeya, an opposition activist and Rwanda's former spy chief, in South Africa on New Year's Day 2014.

The Global Campaign for Rwandans' Human Rights is also very concerned about continuous abductions, assassinations and assassination attempts of Rwandan opposition activists, human rights advocates and journalists in Rwanda and abroad.

Furthermore, we are also deeply disturbed by President Paul Kagame's and other Rwandan government officials' comments that appeared to endorse and celebrate Karegeya's murder.

The Global Campaign for Rwandans' Human Rights calls on governments to protect Rwandan refugees, particularly political and human rights activists, against these ongoing threats against them.

The Global Campaign for Rwandans' Human Rights hopes that the South African police will be able to shed light on the murder of Col. Karegeya and bring the perpetrators to justice.
