Free Aimable Karasira
The Campaign
Aimable Karasira is a university lecturer who became a citizen journalist, using his YouTube channel to discuss Rwandan politics, governance and everyday injustice. In May 2021 he was arrested, and in September 2021 he was sentenced to 6 years in prison for 'humiliating public officials' and 'spreading rumours' in his broadcasts.
Why It Matters
Karasira committed no crime. He spoke his mind in a country where speaking your mind about power is treated as a criminal offence. His trial confirms that the regime treats YouTube commentary - one of the few remaining spaces for free expression available to ordinary Rwandans - as a threat to state security.
Our Demands
The Global Campaign for Rwandans' Human Rights demands the immediate and unconditional release of Aimable Karasira, the dropping of all charges related to his peaceful expression, and protection for citizen journalists who dare to speak truth to power. Free Aimable Karasira.
