The Global Campaign for Rwandans' Human Rights congratulates Navi Pillay on the Nobel Peace Prize
The Global Campaign for Rwandans' Human Rights warmly congratulates former UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Navi Pillay on being awarded the Nobel Peace Prize.
This recognition is deeply deserved, and it carries a special meaning for the Rwandan refugee community and all those who have sought the truth about the crimes committed against them.
A voice for the voiceless
It was under her leadership that the Office of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights was able to investigate, publish and bring to light the many years of hidden crimes and massacres committed against hundreds of thousands of Rwandan refugees in the Democratic Republic of the Congo.
Crimes the world would not have known about were finally documented and published in what became known as the DRC Mapping Report, released in 2010.
The legacy of the Mapping Report
The pursuit of justice has not yet been possible, but with the information contained in the report it can be done. In addition, the report has been used to contribute to other research on the Hutu genocide, work that led to the declaration of the genocide against the Hutu, documented at www.hutugenocide.org.
Our contribution
As a note: at the Global Campaign for Rwandans' Human Rights, we have summarised and immortalised that report so that it can be accessible for researchers, jurists and historians at www.mapping-report.org.
We thank Navi Pillay for her courage, her integrity and her lifelong commitment to human rights, and we celebrate this Nobel Peace Prize as a victory for all victims who have waited decades for the truth to be told.
